Patmos is an island dressed in white and the Aegean’s blue, blessed by God and by nature; it is a place where you happily return. The island hosts a number of festive celebrations and observances, such as the panigyri of Ayios Pandeleimonas at Hiliomodi on July 27 and at the church of Christos in Kato Kampos, en route to Lambi, on the eve of the Metamorphosi Sotiros. On August 15, the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin, there is a panigyri at Panayia Geranou in the Geranos area. The observances include a communal feast, with music and dancing. The small church is located atop Gerani hill, one of the oldest monuments on the island as well as one of its prettiest landscapes. It is the site of a pre-Christian settlement with walls and a cult shrine; the present double-apse church was built over its ruins by fishermen and inhabitants from Konsolato Skalas. Observances for the feast of the Dormition are also held at Panayia Exoskalas, the church of the Panayia on the square of Pano Kampos—an overnight celebration, with folk dances and music performed by local musicians. Ayia Thekla Osioapostolos is celebrated on September 24 at a church dedicated to her on a small islet off the shore at Agriolivadi. Boats carrying pilgrims begin arriving early on the eve of the feast to attend evening services by the priest from Kampos, followed by bread breaking and coffee or kafediasma. On July 7, there is a lively panigyri at Ayios Prokopios, a small church at Giordani near Meloy.
