On Anafi, as on most islands of the Cyclades, the Virgin Mary is worshipped with special reverence as she holds a special place in the hearts of the faithful who invoke her at every difficult turn in their lives. The biggest celebration of the Virgin is held on the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos on September 8 at the Panayia Kalamiotissa. As part of the observance, guests are offered goat simmered in tomato sauce with potatoes and, afterwards, rice pudding. Locals, in full traditional costume, lead folk dances.
