Sikinos, an island off the mainstrem travel circuit, is magnified by its light, a dot of saltiness in the Aegean between Ios and Folegandros. It has a year-round population of 250. According to local custom, the panigyri hosts keeps the saint’s icon for a year, from one feast day to the next. During that year, the family tends to the church, prepares the sesame-honey bars or pastelli offered on the feast day, and hosts the feast day meal where the icon is handed to the next host. At Alopronoia, from the end of August through Christmas, when fishing boats go out to catch squid with the kaftero, there is often spontaneous revelry ashore. A panigyri, complete with music and local delicacies is also held on these dates: The feast of Zoodohos Pigi or Chrysopigi is observed on the first Friday after Easter. Two icons are brought to the church for the evening services: the first is brought, in procession, from the church of Pantanassa; it is an icon of Chrysopigi and a relic of the monastery kept at the church of Ayios Vassilios. The second icon is the one kept by the panigyri host in his home. After church services, the large icon of Chrysopigi is returned and the smaller one is taken to the home of the new host. The feast of the Dormition of the Virgin on August 15 is observed with a panigyri at Episkopi. The island’s biggest panigyri is held on November 21, the feast of the Virgin Mary’s Entry. On the eve of the feast day, the panigyri host brings the icon to church before the evening services. Young children carrying candles decorated with flowers lead the procession, followed by women carrying breads in baskets, congregation members carrying religious relics, the panigyri host with his family, the priests, island officials, with the faithful at the end. The feasting starts the next day after church services.
