Milos is famous for its unique beauty—a piercing light and distinctive geomorphology enveloped in a seemingly endless blue. It is also known for its religious folk festivals, such as the revival of a moving custom: the Tuesday of the souls or Triti ton skolo. On the Tuesday after Easter, the islanders go to church to pray for the souls of the deceased. Church bells then ring joyously, icons are taken around the area in procession, while families of the deceased also hold memorials over family members’ graves at the cemetery. Barouti is another Easter custom. On Easter Sunday, locals in the villages of Triovasalo and Pera Triovasalo, which face each other on opposite hills, gather in the courtyards of the churches of Ayios Spyridon and Ayios Georyios, respectively. After burning the Judas effigy which has been hanging outside since morning, they bells ring three times. The third bell is the signal for a firecracker war, with locals lobbing these at the opposing side while shouting the word “aleimma”. This noisy battle is followed by a communal feast with dancing to folk music, meze, and Milos wine. The Panayia is celebrated on the island at several religious folk festivals featuring local meze, wine, and music after church services. On August 14, the panigyri of Panayia Portiani, the island’s patron-saint, is held at Zefyria and on August 15, the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin, a panigyri is held at the church of the Kimissi Theotokou at Adamantas. The feast of Ayii Pantes, or All Saints, is observed 56 days after Easter at the Catacombs. On July 19, the eve of the feast of Profitis Ilias, there is a panigyri at Halakas and another at Komia. On July 26, locals at Adamantas observe the feast of Ayia Paraskevi with a panigyri, while the birthday of the Virgin Mary on September 8 is celebrated at Panayia Korfiatissa at Plaka. The panigyri of Ai Yiannis is held September 26 at Halakas.
