“Eikones” or icons is a religious custom native to the small, charming island of Kimolos, known as the Argentiera under Venetian rule. Pilgrims host an icon in their home throughput the year, from the day of the feast of the saint depicted until the next feast day, when the icon is taken in procession to the church before the evening service, blessed, and handed over to another one of the congregation. On July 27, the panigyri of Ayios Panteleimon at Prassa brings together the community to share food and dancing. The memory of Osia Methodia is observed on October 5. On November 21, the feast of the Entry of the Virgin Mother, the island observes the feast of its patron-saint, Panayia Odigitria. On the feast’s eve, there the icon of the Virgin is taken through the village in procession; after services, pilgrims are treated to loukoumades, deep-fried dough puffs drizzled with honey. The customary revelry follows.
