Naxos is an island for foodies and even the simplest taverna spoils the diner with its fresh fish, excellent quality meat, and specialties from locally-grown vegetables and locally produced cheeses.
Lefteris at the inland village of Apeiranthos offers rare gastronomic experiences served on a flower bedecked veranda. The restaurant is celebrated beyond Naxos for its food offerings.
Apeiranthos makes for a nice excursion from Naxos Town but rewards the visitor with its picturesque village, history, and of course, the food at Lefteris. The menu is limited but every item is carefully prepared and served, especially the succulent meat from locally-reared stock. Two signature dishes are the juicy hamburger and the aromatic goat roll. The wine list is a pleasant surprise, with a selection of Greek and Aegean labels. The meal ends as wonderfully with homemade galaktoboureko—custard filling baked in fyllo and soaked in syrup.
