A Few Words
Avlonas restaurant is located in the traditional settlement of the same name, just a short distance from the village of Olympos.
Established a decade ago, this family-run restaurant combines tradition with a tranquil open-air environment away from the village bustle.
Ingredients used in dishes are from the family’s vegetable gardens and orchards on the Karpathos slopes: tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, eggplant, artichokes, fava beans, lentils, chickpeas, fruit, and olive oil. The goats, chickens, and turkeys whose meat and other products—like eggs—are used in dishes are farm-raised by the family, which also makes its own cheeses and kneads various breads including the traditional barely rusk rings. Indeed, what makes Avlona special is that diners enjoy their food next to the fields in which ingredients are grown and can even select the produce used in their salads.
The menu features dishes from the culinary traditions of the island and Olympos such as makarounes and wedding goat, which is stuffed or stewed with tomatoes. Offerings include a range of traditional meze, stews simmered stove-top (magirefta) as well as barbecue and other dishes cooked to order in the wood-burning oven.
